STREET & SEWERS DIVISION

An Overview
A Heavy Equipment Operator operates one or more types of heavy, multi-purpose equipment with complex controls requiring a high degree of skill and manipulative ability. A heavy equipment operator also performs a variety of manual tasks in connection with such operations. Employees in this class are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of several types of heavy equipment and are required to have a Commercial Driver's License. Assignments are outlined in detail by a supervisor, standard procedures are followed, and work is inspected periodically for safety and economy of operation. Supervision may be exercised over Laborers I, II, and III and/or Equipment Operators I and II.

The Opportunity
•Primary function is to operate a Vacuum Truck and Sewer Jetter Truck;
•Operates vehicles and equipment in support of Federal MS4 stormwater and sanitary sewer permit activities;
Operates and assists in the loading and unloading, of CDL and non-CDL truck(s) in connection with transportation of sand, stone, asphalt, gravel, equipment and other supplies (tools, small equipment/machinery, etc.);
•Keeps equipment clean, makes minor repairs and reports any malfunctions of equipment to fleet management shop and or Supervisor;
•Utilizes computer software (Cityworks) to track work efforts;
•Responds to citizen inquiries via phone and e-mail regarding Public Works Services;
•Responds to emergency or special events activity as needed;
•Leads a small crew under direct supervision from a Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent;
•Operates a snow plow with a salt spreader, salting/sanding icy streets and also shovels snow when not operating heavy trucks;
•One should possess the ability to perform heavy manual labor in all types of weather;
•Trains subordinates in equipment operation;
•Makes minor repairs on equipment
•Performs related work as required.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

To qualify for this position, all candidates must possess a High School Diploma or GED; three (3) years of experience in the operation of heavy equipment; one year of supervisory experience; thorough knowledge of the proper methods of transporting heavy loads and load limits, traffic safety rules and accident prevention practices; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Skills in the operation of heavy multi-purpose motor equipment under all types of weather conditions

Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the proper endorsements in the state of residency.

Preferred Qualifications

To be considered as an ideal candidate, one should have three (3) years of experience in the operation of a Vacuum/Jet truck and a tanker endorsement on their Commercial Driver's License.
